The Wuhan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (武汉人工智能研究院), known as WAIRI or 武智院, is the public institution behind the Zidong Taichu (紫东太初) multimodal large-model line, developed with the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and led by director Wang Jinqiao (王金桥). Registered in July 2022 with 50 million yuan in founding capital in Wuhan’s East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, it renders its trillion-parameter model as digital humans: it incubated the digital human Xiao Chu (小初), co-built with the Hubei Broadcasting news centre to front national Two Sessions coverage in 2024; presented Zidong Taichu itself as a hanfu-wearing digital-human embodiment; and brought a series of Zidong Taichu-based digital humans to the 2025 Wuhan Design Biennale as multimodal-interaction showcases. Its vertical modules include the legal digital human 元法 system, and the Zidong Taichu open service platform carries its software copyright.
It should not be confused with the similarly named PKU Wuhan Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (北京大学武汉人工智能研究院) — a different legal person in the same city, Peking University’s applied AI arm, which is covered on the Peking University record.
