Tianjin University of Technology (天津理工大学), on Binshui West Road in Tianjin’s Xiqing district, works on sign-language digital humans through its Technical College for the Deaf (聋人工学院), an engineering college for deaf students.
In 2020 the college’s real-time Chinese sign-language translation system for complex scenes was selected as a key task in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s new-generation artificial-intelligence programme. During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, deaf students from the college worked as remote volunteers, converting television news into sign-language-order text for the AI sign-language digital human used in the broadcasts. The college’s research team, formed with the university’s computer science school, is the origin of Tianjin Jingyan Technology, and Baidu names the university and Jingyan as the partners with which it built its Xiling (曦灵) AI sign-language platform. The university has also offered digital-human mock interviews to students as part of its career guidance.
