Shanghai Jiao Tong University (上海交通大学) builds its own digital humans and studies how to measure them. On 8 December 2023 its official video channels — WeChat 视频号, Douyin and Bilibili — introduced the virtual digital news anchor Jiaojiao (交交), planned by the university’s converged-media centre and developed by Professor Song Li’s (宋利) Medialab at the Institute of Image Communication and Network Engineering: the whole pipeline, from anchor data capture through model rendering to video synthesis, was self-designed, with the anchor’s appearance taken from a master’s student on the team. The anchor carries news publishing, course content and event promotion around the clock, and a 2.0 iteration was announced as under development.
The same research base produces measurement work for the field: the university released Gen3DHF, an AI-generated three-dimensional facial quality assessment dataset built with GANs and diffusion models for high-precision digital-human evaluation. Its projects also appear on the 2025 national metaverse typical-cases list, including the 数字全息城市能源互联网的群智调度元宇宙 energy-dispatch metaverse and a jointly developed XR education-metaverse research-training centre.
