Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (上海人工智能实验室), the national AI research institution launched in 2020 and incorporated as a legal person in 2025, runs a dedicated Digital Human Group whose work sits on the supply side of the digital human value chain. The group builds the OpenXDLab (浦画) platform — one of the core projects of the laboratory’s OpenXLab (浦源) open-source system unveiled at the 2022 World Artificial Intelligence Conference — covering four-dimensional data-acquisition systems, large-scale human-body foundation models and datasets, and research into 3D human reconstruction, rendering and generation. Alongside the OpenDataLab data infrastructure it releases under the same OpenXLab umbrella, the laboratory has published high-fidelity synthetic-human and dynamic 4D face datasets used as benchmarks in digital human modelling research. The laboratory keys to the public-institution legal person registered as the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre (上海人工智能创新中心); a separately incorporated enterprise of the same name also exists.
