Consumer platforms as venues · Scenic-area service · Commercial broadcast and IPTV
Oriental Pearl (东方明珠) is Shanghai Media Group’s listed new-media arm, SHSE 600637, established on 16 June 1990 and registered in Xuhui District, with registered capital above 3.3 billion yuan. It opened China’s IPTV market — SMG received the country’s first IPTV integrated operation licence in March 2005 — and it runs IPTV, OTT and cable distribution at national scale.
Its relevance here is on the demand and carrier side rather than the supply side. The company drives a cultural-tourism digital-intelligence programme built on AIGC, VR and AR, with digital humans as one of the interface layers, aimed at immersive service experiences across a content-and-commerce chain it already owns end to end. That is a different proposition from a vendor selling avatars: Oriental Pearl has the distribution, the licences and the venues, and the digital human is a fixture inside them.
The named instance sits one level down, at its subsidiary BesTV (百视通). A digital human presenter called Shang Wenxuan (尚文萱) was unveiled during the Shanghai TV Festival and then took lead vocal on BesTV’s first AI album — announced by Oriental Pearl’s own newsroom in September 2024, alongside a pilot of the Wenxin Diaolong (文心雕龙) content-creation tooling. A presenter who releases a record is a slightly odd artefact of this market and a useful one to note: the same avatar is doing announcer work and IP work at once, which is where a broadcaster’s version of a digital human differs from a vendor’s.
It also holds subsidiaries recorded separately here, including a Shanghai broadcast-technology company registered in Changning District that carries part of the IPTV operation. Where a group of this size is concerned, the useful question is which legal person actually contracts for the work, and this record names the listed parent because that is the entity the cultural-tourism coverage attaches to.
