The Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院计算技术研究所, ICT) is a central public institution (事业单位) founded in 1956 as China’s first academic institute devoted to comprehensive research in computer science and technology. It is registered at 6 Kexueyuan South Road, Zhongguancun, in Beijing’s Haidian district, and is one of the institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The institute positions digital humans as both a research theme and an applied capability stack, spanning core generation and reconstruction methods (including monocular 3D human reconstruction, Gaussian-based representations for full-body digital-human rebuilding from limited reference imagery, and real-time relighting for more realistic appearance), controllable animation and expression modeling for interactive presentation, and multimodal/LLM-enabled interaction layers that connect digital-human embodiments to language and perception systems; alongside this foundational work, it has been appearing in practical deployments and collaborations such as its co-development with Aier Eye Hospital Group (爱尔眼科医院集团) of an ophthalmology-oriented “AierGPT” and an associated “Aier digital human” as a clinical-facing digital-human base for future medical applications, and it also surfaces in public demonstrations and ecosystem activities where digital humans are presented as integrated outputs alongside related enabling components like 3D reconstruction pipelines, multimodal data analysis systems, and application-oriented capability requirements and standards work.
The Aier collaboration has since scaled: by September 2026 the jointly developed AI digital human technology underpinned a matrix of more than 200 full-specialty ophthalmology expert digital humans, whose science-communication agent works were selected for the 2026 national list of quality science-communication works and deployed at Aier Eye Hospital’s headquarters and hospitals in several provinces. In Qingdao, Mengdou Technology (檬豆科技) built the OPIE single-person AI entrepreneur platform in partnership with the institute, supporting one-person start-ups including digital-human and AI animation ventures; it reported 126 registered one-person companies incubated in its first half-year.
