Inner Mongolia University (内蒙古大学), in Hohhot, is the academic home of China’s first minority-language AI synthetic anchor. The Mongolian-language Aoyun AI Synthetic Anchor (奥云AI合成主播), named Xiaodao (小道), was developed over a year by the Mongolian Smart-Media Technology Joint Laboratory — run by the university with Inner Mongolia Daily — together with Inner Mongolia Aoyun Information Technology Service Co. (内蒙古奥云信息技术服务有限公司), and unveiled in July 2020; Science and Technology Daily reported its successful Hohhot debut that September. The system takes Mongolian or Chinese news copy as input, machine-translates between the two, and renders anchor video with bilingual subtitles, and was deployed on Inner Mongolia Daily’s new-media platform — embedding synthetic media into the region’s information infrastructure for the first time. The research line is led by Professor Feilong (飞龙) of the computer science college, whose team has published more than 130 papers, holds nine invention patents, and won the university’s first national-level award in its category for an intelligent news-production system in which a virtual anchor fronts fully automated Chinese-Mongolian bilingual broadcast. The same group leads the Janggar digital human system, launched from a project begun in 2022 with the region’s language-affairs research centre, which gives the hero of the Janggar epic a high-precision 3D-modelled, voice-driven interactive form, with games and animation planned on the same foundation.
