Huawei Software Technologies (华为软件技术有限公司) was registered in Nanjing in September 2005 and is the Huawei company that provides HMS Core, the set of open capabilities Huawei offers app developers; HMS Core’s privacy statements name it as provider.
Its digital-human work is the HMS Core sign-language service, SignPal Kit (华为手语服务), which turns text into sign-language motion data, covering hand movements, body posture and facial expressions, performed by a sign-language digital human; mouth shapes were added in a later release. At the Huawei Developer Conference in October 2021 a sign-language digital human interpreted the whole conference live, and the service was opened to developers as part of HMS Core 6, developed with 信息无障碍研究会 and Beijing Normal University’s Faculty of Education (北京师范大学教育学部). At the 2022 conference the digital human interpreted more than three hours of live proceedings, and the service was used in teaching at schools for the deaf. It built on StorySign, Huawei’s 2018 project with the European and World Federations of the Deaf that generated sign-language animation for children’s books.
It also provides the Huawei account (华为账号), whose mainland privacy statement names it as provider, and with it the account avatar feature 自拟形象, introduced with HarmonyOS 3 in July 2022: users create a personal 3D virtual avatar from a photo, generated from more than 130 facial feature points, customise its face, hair, make-up and clothing, and use it as their picture across Huawei apps, on the always-on display and as stickers in the Xiaoyi input method.
