Blue Universe Digital Technology (蓝色宇宙) is BlueFocus’s virtual-being unit — a wholly owned subsidiary of China’s largest marketing group, established on 18 January 2022 with registered capital of 150 million yuan and registered in Tongzhou District, Beijing. That parentage is the first thing to know about it: this is not an independent studio that happens to sell digital humans, it is the arm through which a listed advertising group took its clients into virtual production.
Its own output covers the three things such an arm needs. The characters: 苏小妹 (Su Xiaomei), a virtual figure created in 2022 with a public profile of her own, and KQ. The tooling: 蓝标智播, a virtual livestream-room product released under the BlueFocus brand, alongside 分身有术 and 蓝标分身 for AI video generation from a cloned likeness. And the venue: a virtual marketing space called 蓝盒子 and a digital-collectibles platform, MEME. It holds an online cultural business operating licence (网络文化经营许可证), which is the permission a company needs before it can run this kind of content commercially in China, and it was among the first batch of ecosystem partners for Baidu’s ERNIE model.
It is here, though, on a tender result rather than a press release. It won the Beijing Dance Academy’s digital human project at open competitive tender — the award notice is public, and it is a second-round award, meaning the first attempt did not produce a winner. A procurement award means somebody wrote a specification, several suppliers bid against it, and this company was judged to have met it: a deployment with a named institutional customer.
A dance academy is also an interesting customer for a digital human. The obvious application is motion — an institution whose entire subject is how a body moves, procuring a synthetic one — and it places the company near the capture and animation end of the supply side rather than the livestream-avatar end where most volume sits.
The award is a matter of public record with a number attached. The Beijing public-resources trading platform published the result on 13 September 2024: the Beijing Dance Academy digital human project, second round, awarded to this company at 1,639,000 yuan, with its address given as Room 209, Second Floor, Building 6, Yard 1A Guanghua Road, Tongzhou.
The WeChat channel adds industry standing rather than deployments: the company is listed as a partner unit of a digital human pilot programme (数字人领航计划) and was invited to the launch of a national metaverse and digital-talent training initiative.
