Beijing Metaverse Sci-Fi Future Technology Research Institute (北京元宇科幻未来技术研究院) is a non-profit academic institution in Beijing’s Shijingshan district, founded on 9 October 2022 after the Beijing Association for Science and Technology convened preparatory talks that September. It is headquartered at the Shougang Park sci-fi plaza on 群明湖大街, and its remit is to consolidate sci-fi resources, drive original content creation and train people for the field.
Its leadership is unusually prominent for a district-level institute. 刘慈欣 (Liu Cixin) is its president and 王晋康 (Wang Jinkang) its honorary president, with the film director 郭帆 (Guo Fan) heading its sci-fi film and television industry institute. It is organised as 三所一中心 — a science-popularisation and sci-fi communication institute, the film and television industry institute, a future science and technology institute, and a science-popularisation education centre — a structure intended to span the whole chain from content production to industrial application.
Digital humans sit inside that toolchain rather than beside it. The institute is associated with motion capture, 3D modelling and photogrammetric reconstruction, virtual previsualisation, 3D scanning and point-cloud work, virtual production pipelines and digital-human livestreaming, and it has staged digital-human hosting demonstrations at sci-fi forums and showcases, including events around Shougang Park and the Zhongguancun Forum.
It is treated as a core institution of the Shijingshan sci-fi cluster, whose industry output is reported as growing from 9.68 billion yuan in 2020 to 16.5 billion in 2023. It has hosted sub-forums and academic sessions of the China Science Fiction Convention, incubated screen projects and new-book launches, took part in the 量子书局 sci-fi themed interactive bookstore that opened in the park in 2025, and in November 2025 ran the fourth Aerospace International Sci-Fi Season, where it showed the mecha 《大胜号》 and helped form an aerospace-mecha industry innovation consortium.
