Beijing Institute of Technology (北京理工大学), one of China’s leading defence-lineage engineering universities, is the primary technical contributor on the digital-human side of the Digital Mei Lanfang (数字梅兰芳) master-reconstruction project, launched with the Central Academy of Drama at the Mei Lanfang Grand Theatre in November 2021. The project set out to recreate the Peking-opera master as a high-fidelity real-time digital human approaching the real person in appearance, body, voice and performance; the BIT optics-and-electronics team’s pipeline began from a large historical photo corpus and a 1:1 reference sculpture captured with high-precision laser scanning, then moved through digital sculpting, reconstruction, simulation and the real-time systems engineering needed for staged and interactive digital-theatre use.
Beyond Mei Lanfang, the university developed the 元宇宙仿真架构及示范应用 (Metaverse Simulation Architecture and Demonstration Application) project on the 2025 national metaverse typical-cases list, keeping it among the university labs whose reconstruction and simulation work supplies China’s virtual-human production chain.
