Alibaba DAMO Academy (阿里巴巴达摩院（杭州）科技有限公司), registered in Hangzhou in November 2017, is the operating company of Alibaba Group’s research institute, DAMO Academy (达摩院), within the Alibaba Group family.
In February 2022 Alibaba launched Dongdong (冬冬), a cloud-driven digital human developed by DAMO Academy to promote the Beijing Winter Olympics. Styled as a 22-year-old Beijing woman who loves winter sports, she appeared in livestreams on Tmall to talk with fans and present Olympic merchandise.
DAMO Academy also built Xiaomo (小莫), a sign-language digital human that translates in both directions between spoken Chinese and sign language. Created by a team of DAMO engineers, Xiaomo won an Alibaba internal public-welfare award in March 2022, served the Hangzhou Asian Para Games in 2023 and has since been used in venues such as the Deshou Palace site museum in Hangzhou; the Zhejiang Vocational College of Special Education worked with DAMO Academy on the underlying sign-language corpus.
In June 2023 two of the company’s algorithms, an open-domain natural-dialogue synthesis algorithm and an interactive multi-capability synthesis algorithm, entered the first national list of filed deep-synthesis algorithms, in the role of service technology supporter.
